Maina,

Would he stand at a Democratic Convention to accept nomination and mention his Kenyan roots. I don’t think he would do that if he felt that low. We might look at issues differently here but one thing is that almost all of us (except you) are proud of Barack Obama Jr. and Kenya by extension.

Don’t you think this year has been a good one for Kenya despite January? No politician died in August, our sports teams have done us proud and now everyone is flocking Kogelo to see Obama’s roots. you’ve got to love your country!

Re: History in the making!

Never in my life time has a single event taken place that got so many in the world excited, surprised, hopeful, fearful and yet in agreement that no matter how anyone sees it, indeed history has been made! I am talking about the election of Senator Barack Obama of Illinois,USA, as the 44th president of the United States of America.

To set things in perspective, I need you to know that I wasn’t in this great Nation, during the time of Martin Luther King, when as I have read and heard, his speeches both electrified and annoyed some ,depending of course on what side of the aisle one was. Notwithstanding, listening to his speeches, one can tell that there were certain things happening prior and during his era, that needed to be addressed or rather changed!

I must admit that every time I have listened to his speeches, more particularly the most famous “I have a dream!,” I have found myself crying non stop! Martin Luther King’s life was cut short without living to see his dream come true!

It has been some forty years since then! While I am made to understand that some things have changed, their are many both in this country and beyond, who until November 4th, saw this great country as more of the same! And that explains why the world finds herself discussing literally of one man-President elect, Barack Obama!

The world as it is, expects a lot from president elect Barack Obama! He is seen by some as a Savior who was raised at the fullness of time to give this great country and by extension, the entire world, a different direction! Is it any wonder that many either claim him as a relative, or desire some kind of association. Indeed, the president elect finds himself, a man most admired by the majority of the people!

There is no question that my prayers and thoughts are with the president elect-Barack Obama and his lovely family. I pray that the good Lord grant give him wisdom as He did to Solomon so as to know how to lead this great nation.

As a minister, I have learned a great deal from the recent happenings. Here are a few lessons!

1. A time is coming when those still alive will witness the great making of history-the return of the Lord of the universe!

2. His second coming will usher a new kingdom, that will bring all the un fairness that has been witnessed in the entire world to an end!

3. According to Isaiah 25:9, there are those who will be excited to welcome the new King while according to Revelation 6:15-17, some will prefer rocks to fall on them than witness his Kingship!

4. After His return, the world as we know it will cease to exist! The Lord of the universe will take charge once and for all.

5. I don’t know how much longer we will have to wait before we witness the grand history in the making. Neither do I know whether or not I will be part of it. But this one thing I know, every single day, brings us closer to the grand occurrence! Hallelujah!

Then, it will not be a dream go wrong or a dream delayed, but then a dream fulfilled at the fullness of time! If there is anyone out there who has doubts that this will finally happen, President elect- Obama Barack’s acceptance speech on the evening of November 4th, 2008, before a sea of people, nay, millions world wide might as well be your answer!

I am truly excited to be alive to witness this! However, I will even rejoice more and set tears of joy when the Lord of the universe deems it appropriate to be the focus of the grand making of history! Oh! I can’t wait to be part of it! How about you loved one!

Nothing but the truth!

I noticed his red eyes and vein popping on his forehead. I was distracted and concerned! I had never seen this transformation. I held my Luo man close to my chest and comforted him. Are you ok”? I asked. “You wonderful Luo woman. Open up!” I tried but cramps. He understood! I knew it. I encouraged him by spreading wide. His body began to quiver. I whispered “Its alright. I am your Luo woman. I’m surprised that no-one (including we Kenyans), seems to have noted the gratitude that US President-elect Barack Obama extended to his Kenyan half-sister Auma Obama in his 4th November 2008 acceptance speech in Chicago.

In terms of his family, he started by thanking his family on his mother’s side, then played glowing tribute to his wife Michelle & their two daughters Malia and Sasha. He then concluded by thanking his (Indonesian) half-sister Maya, and his (Kenyan) half sister Auma, before concluding with a general blanket gratitude i.e. ” and to all my other brothers and sisters”.

Listen carefully to his acceptance speech once again.

This is very significant. He must be extremely grateful to Auma for her great assistance and guidance, in helping him trace his Kenyan ancestry (1980s and early 90s), as documented in his books “Dreams of my Father” and “The Audacity of Hope”. His other Kenyan half-brothers and half-sisters were probably not bothered.

Obama did not even specifically pay tribute to his paternal step-grandmother Sarah Hussein Obama, in this respect, despite as mentioned, paying glowing tribute to his maternal grandmother Madelyn Dunham . My debt to them is beyond measure.

Kind Regards,

George Mungai,

George,

Do you know how big that clan is? You wanted him to thank all of them in that one speech? I see that in spite of being part of a global audience that watched the unfolding drama in Chicago, you elected to come away with something that meant absolutely nothing in the emerging scheme of things.

As was expected, the people of the United States of America did not disappoint.

They came one by one and voted for Senator Barack Obama in all their numbers so convincingly that Senator McCain did not waste time conceding defeat.

This election has been historic in many senses. First, the people of the USA have effectively put to rest the question of race and just like Martin Luther King Jr said, they have judged a candidate not by the colour of his skin, but rather, the content of character.

The people of USA have proved to the world once again that democracy knows no colour, democracy only knows the will of the people. Congratulations.

The American elections were fought on two fronts; the economy and national security. President Obama put up a case that won the hearts and convinced most people that he was equal to the job. This is just like it should be.

In Kenya, we must learn not to fear loosing elections, for such fears can be as destructive as we witnessed in January of this year. We must learn to respect the will of the people by putting up credible issues on the campaign platform.

Once that is done, the best man should be let to win.

This effectively calls for a few changes in Kenya. With President Obama in White House, can we expect greater support to strengthen our institutions of governance. This must start with a complete overhaul of the Judiciary where we must seek all the support to remove the political Judges who are agents of state impunity.

This class of Judges are used by the state to foster oppression and maintain the status quo with regard to all corruption cases. These Judges will subjugate the course of justice as their oil the forces of corruption with impunity.

Secondly, we must be helped to create a new independent electoral body. The farce that we have in place is time tested and proven empty. We must have laws in place that guarantee the independence of the electoral body so that they do not cow-tow to the whims of the president at any time.

Thirdly, the government of Kenya must immediately open Western Kenya. It is gratifying to note that the road to Kogelo is being made now and that Kenya Power & Lighting Company is at this moment installing power to Mama Sarah’s home. This is not enough.

Provision of electric power should not have waited the election of President Obama. It should have been a priority earlier. Same with the road. It is sad that the road linking Nairobi to Western Kenya has for a long time been in ruins. We expect the government to build and maintain a good road link across Western Kenya.

Lastly, the government must think about tourism for the Western circuit. This must come with a good airpot in Kisumu, good beaches devoid of hyasinth, good hotels in the region and all such things that promote tourism.

All is not lost. It is just the beginning for change we can all believe in. Congratulations to the American people for electing one such capable son of the World [Wuod Oganda].

Komarock Nairobi.

That is very good, we are all proud of Obama. Kenya should now move very fast with the new constitution especially about dual citizenship. Just as William said, I still support Williams point: Look Japanese town called Obama are already waiting to make Obama their elder once he visit the town and a citizen of Obama town. They have even decided on that already while Kenya is still, I do not know what they are waiting for? , almost 14 months to go before a new constitution.
It is time to make being proud of Obama to making progress in Africa out of this opportunity God has given Barack Obama. Look at luos and nilotics sufferings from southern Sudan, Uganda, Congo even upto Kenya today.

As poverty is to wealth, so is the female anopheles mosquito to the blood meal.

The other day I am walking home whistling a lovely tune and trying to put some lyrics to it. The not so good lyrics (dirty?) seem to be the easiest to come by. Why I cannot explain.

Lo and behold a vehicle is behind me and I have to step aside. Again… lo and behold its a BIMA and therein lies the thesis of my subject. The bima inevitably reminds me of my poverty –it is true that is I don’t have a ride (yet), but must I be reminded?

In short, wealth, (riches) causes poverty by such blatant displays.

As for the female anopheles, We know that it needs a blood meal once in a while. Where is the male during this time? Life is useless and the world is lost……..

Good people, I feel like I have woken up on the left side of the bed. Or may be I am just a sensible pessimist. Be that as it may, throw some encouraging words this way people.

Sarah,

What are your thoughts are have been my agony for some time. This morning I was thinking exactly the same. Here are some of my agonizing thoughts about poverty:

We are poor because some are rich! when growing up in the village all my grandfather’s wealth was in livestock. My uncles owned theirs but every Christmas bulls were slaughtered at Grandpa’s and at each of his eight wife’s houses in turn each dayduring the festivities.. We, the children, would go from house to house singing, dancing and munching on the mandazi and chapati (delicacies reserved for Christmas only). We were all rich and happyin our poverty! No one went hungry in Grandpa’s large family. All needy cases were assisted by the extended family from their poverty – all were rich in poverty!

Come year 2008, most of grandpa’s children and all his grandchildren wealthy yet there’s pleanty of poverty around them in the vilages; some of their kincannot afford a full meal a day, cannot take theri kids to school, still live in mud houses.

Why are some poor and some rich within the same formerly poor rich (yes, poor rich!) family setting? Because, as you put it Sarah, Poverty is “caused” by wealth. We are poor because our neighbours are rich. We are rich beacause our neighbours have less wealth than us. We are all poor because we all have nothing and, therefore we’re all rich in our poverty because our collective, eqaulising wealth is poverty!

THE REJECTED STONE THAT LATER BECAME THE CORNER STONE.

TO ALL KENYANS AND THE WORLD,

A FEW YEARS BACK PRESIDENT OBAMA HAD VISITED KENYA AND HE WAS SUBJECTED TO HUMILIATION BY THOSE WHO MATTERED IN THE KENYA LEADERSHIP.

MWAI KIBAKI HAD FLATLY REFUSED TO MEET HIM (NOW PRESIDENT OBAMA), KALONSO MUSYOKA AND MOSES WETANGULA HAD CALLED HIM A JUNIOR SENATOR AND THE KENYA AMBASSADOR IN WASHINGTON, D.C., A MR. RATEN’G OGEGO HAD TRASHED HIM.

IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT THE SAME KIBAKI IS NOW HONOURING OBAMA BY DECLARING A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN HIS HONOUR. THIS IS A TRUE CASE OF SHADING CROCODILE TEARS. HIS FOOT SOLDIERS ARE WATCHING IN DISBELIEF.

DANIEL ARAP MOI TOO HAD DESCRIBED GAROLINE KENNEDY AS A YOUNG GIRL WHO HAD NOTHING TO OFFER KENYANS. MOI TOO HAS HIS PLACE CUT UP FOR HIM IN THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION. LET THEM PLEAD FOR PARDON. PRESIDENT OBAMA MAY HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN BUT PERHAPS HAS FORGIVEN THEM FOR THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING.

ALL THESE PEOPLE OWE PRESIDENT OBAMA AN APOLOGY BY WRITING AN OPEN LETTER TO KENYANS AND THE WORLD.

LET US ALL WISH PRESIDENT OBAMA WELL.

IMPLEMENTATION OF WAKI REPORT WOULD REQUIRE RESIGNATION OF KIBAKI AND ODINGA

—–Original Message—–
From: Nyachae Ondimu

Subject: Why we must support the Implementation of the Waki Report.

Why we must support the Implementation of the Waki Report.

It is well over 10 months since an all out violence engulfed Kenya following a closely contested presidential election. Hundreds of Kenyans lost their lives while thousands more were displaced. To this day thousands more are still IDPs.

It is noteworthy to remember the loud cries to help Kenya. The cries were so loud across the globe that “we” were able to arrest the situation ~Kenya was potentially another Rwanda in the offing.

The two protagonists (President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga) agreed to share power. They signed an agreement. The agreement was enacted by parliament and entrenched in the Kenyan constitution. Among the clauses in the agreement was to establish commissions to investigate the post election violence.

The mandate of the Commission of Inquiry into Post-Election Violence (CIPEV) was to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the violence, the conduct of state security agencies in their handling of it, and to make recommendations concerning these and other matters.

No right thinking Kenyan would like to see our beloved country sink so low again. Why we found ourselves in the hole was because of impunity since independence. Impunity, corruption, discrimination based on tribe and cronyism are among the reasons we are so shameful of Kenya to this day. (President-elect Barack Obama has so dearly salvaged the image of Kenya). Those of us in the Diaspora had our own share of pain and shame of the violence.

To use Waki report’s words “we have to break the cycle of impunity which is at the heart of the post-election violence.” It is needless for me to recount the many miseries we all went through.

Since the report made its way to the public, we have seen politicians from the political divide (PNU and ODM) come out in full force to reject it! Reason? Because their names are on the list of suspects! This is not only selfish, but also another way of saying, “ come next elections and we have a re-match (including the violence)”.

Unless we prepare for “war” and confront our fears, fears that if the so and so is put in the dock Kenya will be on fire~ unless we stand firm and be a nation of laws and not mass fear, unless we hold individuals to account, we will perpetually be held captive by greed and tribalism!
This is the reason why I fully support the implementation of the Waki report. I fully support all those in positions of power with the same views including the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon Richard Onyonka.

I am asking all Kenyans and Friends of Kenya to make known the views and particularly make known their support by calling and e-mailing MPS and Ministers including the President and Prime Minister- Support Hon Richard Onyanka who has come out as a voice of reason . If you want peace you must seek justice. Justice must not only be done, but it must be seen to be done. Kenyans did not shade blood or die in vain.

Those who planned organise, funded and executed the killings following the disputed elections in Kenya must face justice. That is the only way we as a society will indemnify the families for their losses and also end the culture of impunity that has plagued Kenya since time immemorial.

Justice Wakis report must be implemented in-toto.

Stephen Ochola.

– – – – – – – – – – –

This idea of calling for the implementation of the Waki report to me is totally uninformed. I am basing my argument on what I have read so far. The report talks of meetings that so and so attended and that those meetings discussed such and such. Evidence of involvement of mentioned key individual, personalities heading armies or arming individuals or heading fighters is luclusture. The real evidence that exist is

1. What and who intiated the violence : Kibaki and those who stole the election did

2. Who responded to the stealing of the election: ODM leadership did verbally

3. Who actually carried out the attack : The small man who is already languishing in prison

So if Waki has done its job then it is practically impossible to leave Kibaki or Odinga out of this. The two have not suffered anything for what happened during the election and yet they were the leaders of the two camps. It is amazing from my point of view for them to insist on implementation if they themselves are the main originators. You cannot prosecute Ruto without doing the same to Odinga unless you want to be unfair. On the same vein, you will never take Uhuru anywhere and close an eye to the comments of Martha Karua during the election if this prosecution has to mean anything. Indeed Kibaki will not be out of this eqauation because the police who killed many people could not have moved without the order from above (Kibaki’s order). So where do you start and end. To implent the Waki report one must start from Raila and Kibaki. This is where Waki should have done. Instead they chose to close the envelope, avoided the nucleus and prosecuted the peripheral agents. This report is going to start nowhere but end nowhere because the investigator is the calprit.

Kibaki and Odinga should stop waisting our time and money with this Waki report. We already know the answer. No one will be jailed if the ceiled envelop has any trueth. The envelope must have both Kibaki and Odinga’s names on it and I will be so happy if they could prosecute themselves first. Let them start by resigning.

I no longer care what the coalition does. We have peace now. Let peace reign untill the next general election comes. Let the displaced be resettled. They are suffering because of the very same things that are beginning to ferment. My point is that selective implementation of this bad one footed report will lead to another violence and this time Kenya will indeed become another Rwanda.

Kibaki and Odinga should stop antagonising Wananchi for their benefit. It is time Kenyans start charting a new path to freedom and prosperity. We are tired of tribal inclinations. We are tired of old guards. We are tired of recycled issues that never get solved. We are tired of reports after reports that never see the light of day. We are tired of poverty. We need new ideas. We need new leadership. We need change.

RE: Obama day

Hello Wanabidii,

I hope you all had a fantastic Obama day there in Kenya!!! The excitement was more than words can describe.

May this day serve as a reminder that a day is also coming to Kenya (and even now is) when we will cease to judge each other by our surnames, tribes and other prejudices because change will have come….let it serve as a notice to those who openly and secretly perpetrate tribalism and hatred that a day is coming when those antics will not work ….where we will elect people to office based on their competence and not tribe. It has taken American over 200 years to come from a voteless era for the Black man to having a Black man in the Whitehouse. About 40 years ago a Black man could not vote in America, or marry a white person, or sit in the same bus! Many, like Jesse Jackson who was with Martin Luther King when he was shot, never thought it would happen in their lifetime ….but when the time had come his eyes beheld that which he only dreamt about. Yet 40 years ago every Kenyan of age could exercise their right to vote, not withstanding issues like
rigging. If God could accelerate things for Americans, He can also do it for Kenyans.

And therefore we must keep on dreaming for a better Kenya. Remember even Joseph in the Bible dreamt of becoming the Prime Minister of the then powerful Egypt, the seat of that present day civilization and it came to pass! Dream dreams for Kenya! Do not despair when you see the riggings, injustices, tribalism, hatred, corruption etc…. cos’ a day is coming when the walls that hold all these hindrances will collapse and give way to a better world for us. We shall win the battle for democracy by chipping away daily at the walls of our obstructions. Who knows in our very lifetimes we will be amazed as we behold the past melt away with all it’s frustrations to give way to a new era in Kenya. We are on the brink of acheiving it. Soon the hate preachers will find themselves with no audiences.

I like the ndugu who wrote on this forum saying that a time should come when you can stand in any constituency in Kenya and be elected in it……just like Nairobi is a “free for all” zone, one day you will not need to come from a specific tribe to be elected by it’s people because change would have come. But we must be patient and wait for that moment. Teach your children about justice and equity because it is them who will steer our nation and give it greatness. Let’s not cry about the past but forge forward to achieve more than our present leaders have been able to do for us. If you have a dream to be a leader let it not just end as a dream….take action – don’t hold back, pursue it with a passion…you may fail once or twice…but who knows what God has planned for you?!

Happy Obama month!

Cheers,
Serah

HUGE CONGREGETION OF BISHOPS AND CHURCH LEADERS CONVERGED AT ALEGO KOGELO VILLAGE IN SIAYA TO KEEP VIGIL AND PRAYERS FOR OBAMA’S ELECTION VICTORY IN THE US.

The Situation Report By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu.

This city of one million people , which is located in the eastern shore of Nyanza gulf in the tip of Lake Victoria is today wash with what appeared to be an Obamania mood and phenomenon as huge and unusual crowd gathered in key part of the town, while other glued themselves next to the television sets in hotels, stadium and nearly al the pubs and all eating houses.

The traders are in for a booming business between today and tomorrow as the US election results is eagerly being awaited here.

The Obama family members have donated several bulls, he goats and rams to be slaughtered during the festive moods. Some of the animals have bneen donated by well wishers and supporters.

Salim Obama, the Senator’s step brother said all family members have gathered at home from all over the world for prayers and vigil, and all those wished to join the family in what looked like an inevitable election victory of Sen Obama jnr, are welcome to the home.

The Bishops have appealed to the population to maintain peace and tranquility law and order in the next forty eight hours as they wait for the “Big News” from Washington .

At the same time the police in Nyanza Province remained alert and vigilant ready to cope up with any eventuality after the word went round that some disgruntled youth had hatched a secret plan to cause mayhem in an unlikely event of Barrack Obama losing the US election to his arch-rival Sen. John Mcain.

For security and their town safety, most foreigners, particularly the whites residents of this lakeside city have been advised to remain indoor and to keep away from crowded streets for the next twenty four hours.

The region is prone for politically motivated, similar to the post-election violence that engulfed this City. It witnessed massive looting and destruction of property wlorth billions of shillings by the enraged youths who were protesting against the suspected rigging of presidential election results. It provoked sharp counter-measures by police, resulting in death of close 69 people who died as the result of police gunfire.

Fears persist that of political thugs could take the advantage of the US election mix up and cause another round of mayhem due to the fact that the populations here support Sen Barrack Obama on man-to-man basis.

At the same time a large number of Anglican and bishops and Archbishops from all the religious denomination in the region have converged at the home of Mama Sarah Obama, the surviving 86 year old step grandmother of Sen Obama to conduct the all night vigil and prayers at the tiny village in Alego Kogelo, where the US Democratic Party presidential candidate’s father the late Barrack Obama snr is buried.

The Bishops are lead by the head of the Powers of Jesus Round the World Bishop Dr. Washington Ogonyo Ngede and Archbishop Silas Owiti of ther Healing Salvation Church . The group consist of bishops, priests and clergymen and women from all the denominations of Christian churches in the region.

Although the US presidential hopeful Barrack Obama was born of a Kenyan father and an American mother, he was bred, brought, educated in America and he is true citizen whose total loyalty lies in the US, many ordinary Kenyan, particularly members of the Luo community, consider him as one of their own. This belief has given the US presidential hopeful a near fanatic following in this Luo predominantly region.

Sen.Obama’s enthusiasm support also come from nearly all the Kenyan communities and Africa in general as his victory and accession to the throne of one of the most powerful nation on the earth is considered by many is a victory to all mankind against the hither to massive oppression and suppressions of black people by the white supremacies.

Obama’s election victory in the US is expected to bring the sanity among the mankind world over the universe, apart from ending up pockets of racial discrimination in some parts of the world, it is expected to bring people together for the mutual of all citizens of the world.

Obama’s supporters have also issued a stern warning to media house and website who were bent on making a quick kill by publishing concocted and distorted articles against him during the electioneering campaign that their heinous activities and schemes were well recorded been noted down “Those who have been hired to write rubbish against the Democrat Party presidential candidate would pay dearly for their mercenaries activities.

, and they would be dealt a heavy blow. Some foreign press and even Kenyan journalist based in foreign capitals who are nursing satiable sinister motive against the Luo community, have been publishing a lot of rubbish and discrediting both Obvama and Raila in the recent past, said the Bishop.

What the overzealous Obama supporters in Kenya seemed to be unaware of is the strict budgetary of the US presidential expenditure, which are strictly controlled by the Congress and Senate’s various financial committees unlike the Kenyan system whereby a President in office can easily cough out a substantial of money top his staunch party supporters and individual, though many believes that with Obama in the White House this continent stands to reap the mutual benefits of his administration due to his roots in the continent.

But given the US buoyant economy Kenya stand to gain a lot though bilateral trade agreements, grants, collaborations in anti-terrorists, massive US funding towards the country’s poverty eradication program, donations for the anti-HIV/Aids and anti-malarial control drugs.

Kenya and the US have the standing military collaboration pacts as well as anti-terrorism pacts that has seen many terrorist suspect flushed out of their hideouts and fished away to the US controlled interrogations camps in both Cuba and Ethiopia.

Bishop Dr. Washington Ogonyo Ngede told me during a brief interview at a coffee restaurant that the clergymen will remain in the Obama family home for the next twenty four hours, and churches will open their doors for the all night vigil prayers to night in most part of the regions.

With Barrack Obama jnr at ther White Hiouse, Kenyans have good reasons of the future increased bilateral co-operation in trades, funding for the country’s budgetary support and donations and funding for the country socio-economic activities.

He, however gave a stern warning to anybody bent on mischief and acts of thuggery. People should go home early and indulge in all night prayers for Obama. He said if the Illinois Senate win the Us election, the Bishops and other leaders in the region will charter several plane loads of local leaders, civic, church elders and prominent persons who will be flown to the US to witness the Obama swearing in ceremony in Washing early next year.

TRADE WAR BETWEEN KENYA AND SOUTH AFRICA HAS INTENSIFIED AFTER PRETORIA IMPOSED THE BAN ON THE COUNTRY’S AVOCADOES IMPORTS.
Business feature By Leo Odera Omolo

As per a report filed earlier by this writer, the South African government has now officially clamped a total ban on Kenya ‘s avocados exports to its market.

This has prompted players in the Kenyan horticultural industry to ask the government to immediately take a retaliatory action on non-tariff barrier on South African imports in response to the latter’s ban on Kenyan avocados.
South Africa in the past six months, has virtually banned imports of fresh fruits from Kenya , citing fruit fly infestation.

There have been an un successful efforts by Kenya in the past to have the ban lifted, with the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) pleading for Kenya fruits in vain. This is an internationally recognized body charged with the responsibility of serving as a certifying agency, serving South Africa with documents detailing tests carried out that gave the fruits a clean bill of health.

Fresh Produce Exports Association of Kenya chief executive officer (CEO) Stephen Mbithi was recently quoted by the Nairobi’s popular weekly, the EASTAFRICAN as saying that, although South Africa has finally responded to inquiries on why the ban was still on and asked for “further technical details,- – the ban should be lifted because it is illegal and against the World Trade Organization’s{WTO} Sanitary and Phyatosanitary agreement .

Kephis managing director Dr.Chagema Kedero was also quoted by the same media as saying that the institution was currently busy sampling the information wanted by South African authorities and was hopeful that the interrupted trade would be restored soon.

The KEPHIS boss added that Kenya joined the organization for economic cooperation and development fruit and vegetable scheme, which sets out standards in international trade, and of which South Africa is a member, a development that is expected to make it easier for the two countries to resolve the problem amicably, Dr.Mbithi said if the ban is not lifted then Kenya must with immediate effect ban imports of fruit pulp and fresh fruits from South Africa in retaliation.

His sentiments had been echoed by Mr.Matanda Wabulye, the CEO of the Kenya export Promotion Council, who was also quoted by the same media house as saying “we see this ban as a constraint on trade with South Africa – – South Africa banned Kenyan avocados from its markets in April this year saying they could spread fruit flies, but market players discounted this angle of argument, saying it was a lame excuse because, although the flies are a common pest across Africa there was no infestation in the region as cited by the South African Authorities.

Kenya is South Africa largest trading partner in East Africa with the economic survey of 2008 showing there was a fast growing trade between the two economic power houses of the region of the Eastern and Southern African regions.

Last year export to South Africa was worth kshs 2.3 billion against South African import worth USD 504 million. If the avocados produce exporters have their way , apples, mangoes, oranges and pears among other common fruits from South Africa that have dominated local retail outlets in the recent past ,could disappear from many towns in Kenya.

Sources at the Trade Ministry in Nairobi say the government is pursuing a diplomatic solution to he simmering trade row and the parties seem to be agreeing.

Avocado is one of the Kenya ‘s emerging horticultural crops that fetches up to kshs 2.3 billion (usd 31.4 million) annually from exports mainly to the European Union (EU)

On an industrial scale , the crop is an important revenue earner for listed agricultural farm,Kakuzi imited based in Thika district.

Kakuzi exports of the Hase avocado variety accounts for an estimated 7 per cent of Kenya ‘s total avocado export to Europe .

However at Kshs 150 million (USD 2.1 million) annually, South Africa market is still considered the single largest export destination for Kenyan avocados outside Europe .

Industry player say that if South Africa had a genuine ease, the EU considered being more stringent in traceability, sanitary and physosanity rules, would have banned the fruit as well.

Kenya is favoured by an equatorial climate that allows it to produce avocado through out the year unlike south Arica , whose productions is seasonal.

The officials say the local horticultural industry has been working closely with the Kenya plant Health inspectorate services personnel to have he said phytosanitary concern addressed.

Despite local producers farning to value addition in the hope of increasing exports recounts snow avocado export to South Africa have fallen by 80 per cent since the ban was affected from last April.

The ban has raised eyebrows as some see it as an illegal way of protecting the South African avocado industry.

Experts say the South Africa government has been known to resort to non- tariff trade barriers before to protect it’s from external competition.

“They are breaking WTO agreement because they are trying to protect their industry by banning imports “said Dr.Mbithi.

The South African government, however many the legally exploiting a provision in international trade laws that allows countries to institute trade barriers in certain circumstances.

“International laws themselves allow countries to protect themselves from hazardous imports that threaten their crops and this is what the South African government has used “said an official of the Kenya Horticultural crops Development Authority Edward Maina. South African like Kenya also a major producer of avocados with most of its exports going to Europe . However avocado industry in that country is seasonal due to the presence of very cold winters leading to low productions.

The production season for the county’s avocados is between March and October while Kenya on the other hand enjoys an equatorial climate and avocado trees in the country produce all year around Mt.Kenya and the North rift region.

Despite the ban, not all of Kenya ‘s avocados exports to South Africa have been affected, since some exporters have started adding value to their avocado experts extracting the oil and exporting it.

President Obama? A Luo? – The Curse Of The Bambino Is No More.

People Of The World,

No politician I voted for, or supported dearly has ever won an election. Ratibu Hussein Ali lost to Nathan Kahara, Achieng Oneko lost to Mwangi Mathai, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga lost to Moi, Raila Odinga lost to Moi, Gore lost to Bush, Kerry lost to Bush and Raila lost to Kibaki. I equated this lack of winning in my voting history to the Curse of the Bambino. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Bambino

So in early October, I asked you to advice me how to vote in the recently concluded elections, in an attempt to reverse this losing syndrome. 99.9% of you insisted that I give Obama my vote lest he loses by one vote. One person advised me to follow my gut feeling even if it was not consistent with what my 10th great grandfather, Ragem was suggesting.

I reasoned that in the US of A, they do not have chiefs, provincial commissioners, administration police, and the culture of ‘kula huko, kura hapa.’ I also reasoned that in the US of A the president does not appoint election commissioners, rather the election is conducted by civilians, and the votes are not tallied at KICC. I concluded that the probability of Obama losing contrary to all polls indicating otherwise, would only be as an act of a bambino-like curse. Now didn’t your grandma tell you how to reverse a curse? Mine did.

Faced with the dilemma – to vote for Obama and he loses based on my record, I asked my ancestors to give me a sign. A vision flashed right before my eyes and I saw Raila asking his tribe to circumcise. I also saw Raila Odinga changing his tune and saying that those responsible for the election violence would face the law. You need to understand that I was awe struck. How could Raila turn against the very people who fought and even died so he could be where he is today? Then I realized what he was doing. He was doing something different, and this was not congruent to Obama’s message of change. Another vision pointed to Mandela forgiving his captors and MLK asking his people not to be violent faced with abject discrimination. They all did something different, and this again was consistent with Obama’s message for change. In fact, in his story about the Pie Restaurant owner who admitted that his business was not doing well, he quipped, “If you keep hitting your head on the wall, it will begin to hurt, and at some point you will need to stop and do something different!” Can’t you see, my 10th great grandfather Ragem, asking me also to do something different, something drastic. Ssssh it is something I would not want my descendants to know I did.

Like a lunatic, I run to the polling station and cast my vote forthwith for Senator John McCain, so Obama could win. Sure enough, the bambino-like curse is no more, and yes a Luo (another bambino-like curse was that a Luo could not be a leader of a nation) is going to be president of a nation which is the leader the free world, yet I say it not.

Please do not let anyone wake us up from MLK’s dream, which until recently we had no idea had us embedded and intertwined.
